HELP STOP THE DENSE 5 STAR DEVELOPMENT PROPOSED FOR SMUGGLER'S
COVE!!!
SMUGGLERS COVE - BVI NATIONAL HISTORIC PARK -
TORTOLA, BVI
Subject: HELP STOP THE DENSE 5 STAR DEVELOPMENT
PROPOSED FOR SMUGGLER'S
COVE!!!
THERE IS A
PLAN TO CONSTRUCT A DENSE EXCLUSIVE 5 STAR RESORT ON
SMUGGLER'S COVE
AND THE GOVERNMENT LAND NEARBY WITH THE HERITAGE SITE.
IT IS NOT A
DONE DEAL YET- UNLIKE SOME OF THE OTHER PLANNED RESORT
DEVELOPMENTS
IN THE BVI, THE LAND HAS NOT YET BEEN SOLD. IT IS NOT TOO
LATE TOO
STOP IT!!!
For background, a letter sent to the BVI
Beacon is attached. A new non
profit organization is being formed,
BVI Islands Heritage Conservation
Group (BVIHCG), to raise funds to
purchase all three lots and turn them
into a park system as proposed
by Government in 2005. That's right all
3 parcels were slated to
become a park system! Government first
drafted the plan in 2001
then refreshed and updated it in 2005. A park
system to
include:
1 Historic, cultural and archeological : eg.,
documenting and preserving
the slave-era burial ground,
reconstruction of the Arawak site.
2. Nature, educational and
scientific: eg., creating a satellite of the
Botanic gardens, Darwin
Initiative project, site for class projects.
3. Recreational:
eg.,hiking trails on Belmont Peak, walking trails
through the dunes,
mangroves, and Palm Grove.
4. Water-related activities
(educational/scientific): eg., species
identification, and ecosystem
instruction for children.
5. Water-related activities
(recreational): eg., beach activities, such
as swimmimg, sun bathing
and low impact sports.
6. Physical development: eg., restrooms,
beverage and souvenir stalls,
retreat house (in ruin hill) for civic
and educational functions,
parking for users of the beach, retreat
and Arawak site.
THERE IS NO PROTECTED BEACH PARK ON
TORTOLA. YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE-
WE CAN MAKE THIS PARK SYSTEM
HAPPEN. This is a grassroots effort led by
Belongers to protect BVI
birthright, heritage, and ensure a wonderful
legacy for generations
to come.

Help raise
awareness about the distruction of/developement on one of
Nature's
Little Secrets, the very things tourists come to the BVIs for.
The
BVI tourist board is hosting a Travel Industry Conference on Feb
22nd.
BVIlanders need all the support and encouragement
the community can
offer. Understandably, it is sometimes difficult
to raise a voice in
such a small world but there is power in
numbers. Please forward this
to as many people as you know and ask
them to write letters. Draft
content ideas can be found on the BVI
Platinum Message Board under
General Discussion. Look for the one
on Smuggler's Cove.
